3-D Type Sculpture

I am making a "type totem pole" out of clay that is geared to children. Essentially, the individual letters (blocks) will fit together to form the totem pole. The goal of the piece is to help children understand the importance of typography. This is the first draft of the clay. I will continue to smooth and paint.

I am going to create 3-D letterforms and characters from polymer clay. This is the stand I built to construct a wire armature as a base for the clay. Next, I will bake in the oven and finally paint. I will continue to the add the steps as I go. Wish me luck!

Collateral Design Comp

I decided to take a different approach and redo my design. The thinking centers around the confusion that a vertigo suffer experiences. The weeble design now has jumbled text and a collage of photographs to reiterate this concept. The magazine layout concept resembles an ink blot to symbolize the Rorschach inkblot test in psychology.....related to the undetermined cause of vertigo. The color scheme is primarily black/ white with blue being the only color because this is the client's logo color choice. The blue square will house the drug info and the notebook paper the hold the directions.

This is my first draft of my collateral design for Antivert, used for vertigo. My design is a desk sized weeble which is constructed from an egg and paper.

Zuni Project

This was a Creative Circus Intro to Graphic Design project.

The Zuni Indians and llamas are the focus of this work. With the Zuni being the direct art influence and the llama being the contrasting focal point.

Part 1: Zuni Design Poster

The cut-paper poster reflects the Zuni sacred sunrise drum circle. The rhythm of the design leads the viewers eyes into the llama where at that point he steers the eye a final time to the sun god at the upper right corner. Zuni designs and language are placed throughout the piece, as well as informative text to highlight the piece’s meaning.

Medium:
24”x 28” cut paper in cool grays with warm grays in the most contrasted part
(Zuni Sun God).

Part 2: Zuni Dream Posse

These fetish figurines are drawn from the Zuni’s Japanese influence. Each fetish represents its corresponding direction in Zuni and sits in a wooden triangle house with Zuni designs burned onto it. The llama serves as the posse’s leader and sits in the center house with a dream staff.

The hunting fetishes of the four directions are:
North: Mountain Lion (yellow)
South: Badger (red)
West: Coyote (blue)
East: Wolf (white)

Medium:
Figurines were created using Sculpey designed with acrylic paint. Packaging is wooden triangles, burnishing tool and acrylic paint.

Book Cover and Book Pages

This Creative Circus Typography II project comprised designing a book for a short story. There were no parameters.

The short story is “Time, Again” by Tim Maly. The author explores both the presence and the absence of time in our lives.

I used minimal lines and white space throughout the design to achieve a clean, modern feel. The story’s romanticism is reflected through the red-violet, red-orange, and blue-green triadic color scheme. The inside pages are printed on transparent laser paper, each of the four pages successively revealing the entirety of the image over time. This develops the meaning of Space-time, with space being three-dimensional and time being the fourth dimension. By placing the text in a disjointed cube-fashion, I have symbolized the absence of order in time. Furthermore, the mirrored text reflects the Space-time rationale of a parallel universe.

Medium:
Cover is printed on 8.5” x 11” white paper in the portrait orientation. The cover document is one-half inch taller and wider than the inside pages to allow room for binding.
Inside pages are printed on 8.5” x 11” transparent paper in the landscape orientation.

Bodoni and Didot Type Poster

This Creative Circus Typography 1 project centered on exploring two typefaces. The parameters were only type and a monochromatic design.

Bodoni is the first part in a two part series. The second typeface is Didot. My focus centered on exploring larger artistic and social movements of the time period that each typeface was created. By doing this, I derived deeper thinking into the creation of both the Bodoni and Didot typefaces.

Beauty is the concept behind the Bodoni poster. At this time, the Italian Art movement looked to capture the essence, and in some ways, the innocence of the Renaissance era. Giambattista Bodoni conveys this belief by combining beautiful counters with contrasting linear stems. By placing the ‘B’s in a butterfly shape, I have symbolized both the rebirth and beauty of Italian Art as well as highlighted the contrasting parts of the letterform.

Contradictory to the Italian Art movement, the Neoclassical Era that Firmin Didot embraced geared itself on the ideals of order and restraint. Art looked to meet a moderate goal instead of strive for an infinite ideal. By placing the ‘D’s in this position, I have pinpointed the logic and order in Didot’s design by focusing on the straight lines and angles in the letterform.

Mane and Tail Logo

This Creative Circus Trademarks I project assignment comprised recreating a shampoo logo. The sole parameter was no color.

The focus is on the brand Mane and Tail. This product was originally formulated for horses, but was eventually marketed to young women to help grow their long locks. I created a female centaur that represents the blending of the product’s two intended audiences.

This is a project that I created for myself and completed over a two-week time period in November 2007.

The canvas is a blank vinyl doll that I represented as a cyborg. I found the juxtaposition of man and machine in one body to reflect the idea that technology separates man from his natural environment.

Peenk Stationery Design

This Creative Circus Typography II project entailed creating stationery for an imaginary cartoon, pharmaceutical company, or nation. The sole parameter was to utilize only type to convey the message.

My focus is on a mature cartoon geared to ages 18-34. The concept is a group of inner-city kids that are forced to reckon with a group of unruly chick ghosts. Armed with toxic spray-paint, the kids confront the floating specters by way of helium balloons. Alas, the ghosts defend themselves with sharp pointed sewing needles aimed to pop the hoodlums’ balloons. The name of the show is “Peenk”, reminiscent of the sound that balloons make when they burst, as well as our floating villains. The color scheme is interchangeable from white, grey, and red-violet with hues of pink. This scheme is reflective of both the ghouls’ femininity and the urban basis of the show. The typeface chosen to display text is Didot. Its order and logic serves as a juxtaposition next to the handwritten street logo.

This Creative Circus Typography II project assignment focused on choosing one quote that different design parameters were applied to each week.

The first assignment was to interpret the quote through type. The quote used is a lyric by Ani DiFranco. When hearing the song and reading the words I felt a lot of anger in her voice at the beginning. This is reflected in the larger bold letters I chose to emphasize the strength and hurt she exhibits. Next, I tweaked the movement of the text to personify the words “inhaled” and “exhaled”. I separated the two lines of text with white space to recreate her feeling of disconnect.

In this assignment, we could only use 60-point type. I chose to “smoosh” the quote into an illegible triangle indicative of the haze and blur connected with smoke as well as the confusion the author felt by her lover’s actions.

The concept behind the logo animation is a fade into a shot of the lobby that will then morph into three different images (water, tree and building). Each representing life, strength and growth . Once each image comes into view, the icon will then retract and the logotype will scroll into it's final position. Lastly, the main icon shape will morph over the picture image.
